About San Diego State University

San Diego State University (SDSU) is a public research academe in San Diego, California. Founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, it is the third-oldest academic circles and southernmost in the 23-member California State University (CSU) system. SDSU has a fall 2020 student body of 35,578 and an alumni base of higher than 300,000.

It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity”. In the 2015–16 fiscal year, the university obtained $130 million in public and private funding—a sum of 707 awards—up from $120.6 million the previous fiscal year. As reported by the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index released by the Academic Analytics dispensation of Stony Brook, New York, SDSU had the highest research output of any small research university in the United States in 2006 and 2007. SDSU sponsors the second-highest number of Fulbright Scholars in the State of California, just at the rear UC Berkeley. Since 2005, the academe has produced higher than 65 Fulbright student scholars.

The academic world generates over $2.4 billion annually for the San Diego economy, while 60 percent of SDSU former students remain in San Diego, making SDSU a primary educator of the region’s proceed force. Committed to serving the diverse San Diego region, SDSU has one of the ten most ethnically and racially diverse student bodies in the course of universities nationwide, and is also one of the summit ten for number of bachelor’s degrees conferred upon minority students.

San Diego (/ˌsæn diˈeɪɡoʊ/, Spanish: [san ˈdjeɣo]; Spanish for ‘Saint Didacus’) is a city in the U.S. state of California on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and snappishly adjacent to the United States–Mexico border. With an estimated population of 1,423,851 as of July 1, 2019, San Diego is the eighth most populous city in the United States and second most populous in California (after Los Angeles). The city is the county chair of San Diego County, the fifth most populous county in the United States, with 3,338,330 estimated residents as of 2019. The city is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches and parks, long connection with the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology onslaught center.

Historically home to the Kumeyaay people, San Diego is frequently referred to as the “Birthplace of California”, as it was the first site visited and granted by Europeans on what is now the West Coast of the United States. Upon landing in San Diego Bay in 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the area for Spain, forming the basis for the treaty of Alta California 200 years later. The Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcalá, founded in 1769, formed the first European agreement in what is now California. In 1821, San Diego became allowance of the newly declared Mexican Empire, which reformed as the First Mexican Republic two years later. California became part of the United States in 1848 following the Mexican–American War and was admitted to the union as a give leave to enter in 1850.

San Diego’s main economic engines are military and defense-related activities, tourism, international trade, research, and manufacturing. The city is the economic center of the San Diego–Tijuana conurbation, the second most populous transborder metropolitan area in the western hemisphere (after Detroit–Windsor), home to an estimated 4,922,723 people as of 2012. The primary link up crossing in the midst of San Diego and Tijuana, the San Ysidro Port of Entry, is the busiest international home border crossing in the world outside of Asia (fourth-busiest overall). The city’s primary airport, San Diego International Airport, is the busiest single-runway airstrip in the world.
