About Occidental College

Occidental College (informally Oxy) is a private futuristic arts bookish in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1887 as a coeducational studious by clergy and members of the Presbyterian Church, it became non-sectarian in 1910. It is one of the oldest unprejudiced arts colleges on the West Coast of the United States.

Occidental’s current 120-acre campus is located in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, and was designed by architect Myron Hunt. Due to its proximity to Hollywood and its architecture, the campus is frequently used as a filming location for numerous film and television productions. Occidental is a founding aficionada of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and its 21 varsity sports teams compete in NCAA Division III. The college’s curriculum emphasizes diversity, global literacy, and civic engagement.

Notable alumni combine a President of the United States, a Cabinet member, the current Mayor of Los Angeles, several members of the United States Congress, CEOs of notable companies, 10 Rhodes Scholars, and recipients of the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and Emmy Award.

Los Angeles (/lɔːs ˈændʒələs/ (listen); Spanish: Los Ángeles; “The Angels”), officially the City of Los Angeles and often abbreviated as L.A., is the largest city in California. With an estimated population of approximately four million people, it is the second most populous city in the United States (after New York City) and the third most populous city in North America (after Mexico City and New York City). Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, Hollywood entertainment industry, and its sprawling metropolis.

Home to the Chumash and Tongva, the area that became Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542. The city was founded on September 4, 1781, under Spanish supervisor Felipe de Neve, on the village of Yaanga. It became a portion of Mexico in 1821 as soon as the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the fade away of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the flaming of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and therefore became allowance of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months back California achieved statehood. The discovery of oil in the 1890s brought gruff growth to the city. The city was extra expanded once the deed of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, which delivers water from Eastern California.
