About Hartwick College

Hartwick College is a private college in Oneonta, New York. The institution’s heritage is rooted in the founding of Hartwick Seminary in 1797 through the will of John Christopher Hartwick. In 1927, Hartwick Seminary moved to enhancement into a four-year assistant professor and was offered house by the city of Oneonta to change to Hartwick College’s current location. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Oneonta had a population of 13,901. Its nickname is “City of the Hills.” While the word “oneonta” is of undetermined origin, it is popularly believed to mean “place of edit rocks” in the Mohawk language. This refers to a prominent geological formation known as “Table Rock” at the western subside of the city.
